This year’s event will feature The Red, White and Blues Band, Foghat drummer Roger Earl, folk legend Caroline Doctorow and so many more great acts. There will be food, raffles and drink specials. This is an event not to be missed for an important cause from an amazing man. Please join SpotonLI.com, WBAB and Mick DuRussel on Sunday April 25th at the Nutty Irishman in Farmingdale.
Christine- For those who don’t know, what is ALS?
Mick- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Among those who have passed away from ALS includes Catfish Hunter, jazz great Charles Mingus, boxing champ Ezzard Charles, Jacob Javits, David Niven, soap star and Michael Zaslow.
Christine-Mick, tell us about why ALS is near and dear to your heart?
Mick-I had a half brother pass away from this dreadful disease about 14 years ago. It’s a terrible way to die. I decided a few years ago to start my own crusade to help find a cure and it continues to gain momentum each year!
Christine-This is the 3rd benefit for ALS that you have done. Can you tell us about this year’s lineup?
Mick-This year’s lineup is nothing short of spectacular! The event kicks off at 3:00PM. The first band is the Raves who are actually the Rainbows from Randy and the Rainbows. Classic rock at its best! Next up is the legendary Ian Lloyd’s Stories. Ian had a huge number one hit in the 70′s with ‘Brother Louie’. That 70′s Band follows and they are absolutely the best party band on Long Island. Have your dancing shoes on for this band! The great Barnaby Bye is next. They are in the Long Island Music Hall of Fame and recently opened for America at the North Fork Theater in Westbury. The show closes with the Red White and Blues Band which features members from Cindi Lauper’s original band. They will be joined by Godfrey Townsend from the Alan Parsons Project, Andy Aledort from the Dickey Betts Band and folk legend Caroline Doctorow. Also coming is Foghat’s legendary drummer Roger Earl and harmonica play Bob “Sugar Lips” Lefkowitz. One of Long Island’s favorite radio DJ’s Bernie Bernard will be on hand most of the day. And there will be some surprise guests that everybody is going to love!
Christine-SpotonLI.com will be there on Sunday but if someone would like to go but can’t make it to the show, where can they donate?
Mick-Donations are greatly appreciated and they can be sent to the Columbia university ALS Gift Fund, Columbia University 630 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032 And please mention Sound Success For ALS on your check and letters as that will help my crusade gain more recognition!
