The Kandi Girlz is an all girls music group hailing from St. Louis, Missouri. The group consists of the three sisters- Brittany, 18, Dolly, 15 and Sade, 14. Together, with their musical talents, they have produced hometown hits such as “Step Up in the Club” as well as making appearances at numerous shows such as the “Teen Swag Awards”.
With the combination of their talents and energetic personalities, The Kandi Girlz are slowly climbing their way into mainstream stardom. Not to take music for granted, the girls are also very educated. Brittany is currently attending college, while Dolly and Sade are currently in the process of graduating high school. They have a good head on their shoulders and most importantly a great outlook on life. Nothing but positivity flows through their minds and soon that positivity will turn into some real success on the pop charts.
Jason
Where are you guys from and how old are the three of you?
Kandi Girlz
We’re from St. Louis, Missouri.
Brittany- I’m 18 years old.
Dolly- I’m 15 years old.
Sade- I’m 14 years old
Jason
When did you guys begin to sing? Did you have a favorite role model? Did your mom encourage you to sing?
Kandi Girlz
Dolly- Well I was in a group called the Bebe Kids. We were a rap group. I was also inspired by my older siblings. Music kind of runs in our family.
Brittany and Sade- Yea, we were inspired by everyone around us making music. We wanted to join as well.
Jason
How has it been like growing up in a musical family like that? You guys always singing and dancing around the house?
Kandi Girlz
Yea, it’s kind of nice though, because we each have our own strengths that complement each other. My older brother and sister help write songs for us. Brittany makes up dances. We can also write our own songs too. Everyone helps out in the family. We all know how to do something different musically.
Jason
How did Kandi Girlz form? Where did the name come from?
Kandi Girlz
Sade- The name Kandi Girlz came from my older sister. She came up with it when we were younger. I guess we were kind of young and sweet and that’s how we got that name.
Jason
What kind of music did you want to make when you first started. You guys are a very energetic and enthusiastic bunch. What kind of sound did you guys want to go for?
Kandi Girlz
Dolly- We wanted to do like pop and reggae. You know, just all types of music. We like to incorporate styles from all types of music. We kind of like just doing a little bit of everything. We love music in general. We can do rock and country, you know, just whatever feels good.
Jason
What was it like when you made your first big music video, “Step Up In The Club”? Were all your friends going crazy? Were they all like, “Wow! They can spit, sing and dance. This is crazy!”
Kandi Girlz
Dolly- (laughs) Yea it was kinda crazy. Everyone at school was like “Oh my god!” They were all talking about my mommas bed in the video, cuz it’s like one of those Tempur-Pedic beds that moves up and down. It’s one of those remote control beds. So they thought that was really cool. Everyone was singing the song. Even the teachers were singing it.
Sade- I was in my technology class and the teacher pulled down the giant screen and we all watched it during class. It was really fun. My teacher said it was a really positive and uplifting song. Everyone really liked it. So, that was pretty cool.
Jason
So I have to ask you this. Where do you guys get that swag from? You guys got some crazy moves up there when you’re performing.
Kandi Girlz
We actually watch a lot of Beyonce. (laughs) We learn a lot from her. We watch all of her performances. We kind of take what we learn, then apply to our own routine. We change stuff around to make it our own. But yea, like Beyonce, Britney Spears, The Pussy Cat Dolls. They’re all great inspirations.
Jason
You recently came out with a song called “Extraordinary”, a remix of Gudda’s Gudda’s song of the same. What was that experience like? Where did you guys film it?
Kandi Girlz
Brittany- We shot the video in New York. It was so much fun. Everyone was looking at us (laughs). But we liked it there. It was really nice. That was our first time even going to New York. It was a little overwhelming, but we got used to it.
Dolly- Yea, New York is a nice place…a lot of different people.
Jason
You guys seem like really close sisters, but how are you each unique from one another?
Kandi Girlz
Dolly- I’m different from the rest of them because I can play the piano. I taught myself how to play the piano and I also compose my own songs too. I started last year. My friend Naomi inspired me to play the piano.
Sade- Well, I’m the youngest. I’m also different because I can imitate accents. I’m also double jointed. (laughs)
Brittany- Well I’m older, so that makes me different. I also play drums.
Jason
Why is your education so important to you as well as your music career?
Kandi Girlz
Dolly- It’s really important because it can help you get a really good job. It looks good on you if you get a good education. It can help you get the dream job you want.
Sade- If the music doesn’t work out, you can always go back to your job. You don’t have to go back to school later on. It’s good to have a plan B.
Brittany- I go to college right now. I’m studying to be a mortician.
Jason
What can we expect to hear in the future?
Kandi Girlz
You’re going to hear a lot of things…a lot of different genres. You’re going to hear rock, hip-hop and dance. We already have a mixtape on ThatCrack.com. It’s called Kandi Treats Volume 1. We have a lot of stuff on there like a Black Eyed Peas cover, a MC Hammer Cover, some Chris Brown…a lot of new stuff and some of the old stuff. Perhaps in the future we can work with Young Money artists like Short Dawg and Gudda Gudda. You can also find out all the latest updates on our Twitter @The_KandiGirlz. Thanxx!!
