Lethill Weapon Opens for Too Short
by Jason Pollak
On January 27, the Lindenhurst rap group Lethill Weapon opened up for one of raps living legends, Too Short. The Friday night venue at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn was packed out, waiting to see the local Long Island group open for the West Coast rapper. It was definitely a big moment for the members of Lethill Weapon and was most certainly a testament to the hard work they have been putting into their music.
The energy was high backstage as JJ Jones, R.A.M. and Terrence aka G La, prepared themselves to take the stage. They seemed confident and in control as they went over their play list with their DJ. However the nerves seemed to be at ease since these three are veterans when it comes to performing. This past November they opened up for New York’s most infamous group, Mobb Deep. With that show under their belts, they were ready to tear down the house again.
With the recent release of their mixtape “Welcome to the Danger Zone Vol. III” and new album which dropped February 6, they had a lot of new material to play for the crowd. Led by JJ Jones as they stormed out from backstage, they immediately launched into one of their hard core tracks to get the crowd going. It definitely riled up everyone and the crowd immediately responded back with the same energy going on stage. People were waving their hands and screaming on the trio as they riddled off rhyme after rhyme.
As they did in their previous show, each rapper took turns performing their solo tracks from the new mixtape as well as some older classic tracks from the past. It’s great to see a group that has such diversity as these three do. They are each introspective and down to earth, yet portray a different level of emotion in their songs which truly makes them unique. Through all of the crowd noise and blasting speakers, you can really see and hear the hard work and grind these guys put into their craft.
Also there, representing Lindenhurst, was up and coming rapper Prophet. He recently released his debut album “Torn Between Two” and gave the crowd a bit of a taste of what’s on his album. Accompanied by brother and DJ, LabRat, it truly was a family outing for the men of Lindenhurst. It was also nice to see the welcomed greeting these Long Island rappers got at such a notorious Brooklyn venue such as the Knitting Factory. It says a lot about how rap has elevated to a different level and how many possibilities are now out there.
Too Short killed it as well and really tied the whole show together. It was quite a pleasure to be able to see one of raps OG’s come back to perform at a local venue for the fans. It was a great event, but Lethill Weapon isn’t done yet. During their set they announced their first headlining performance which will be at the the notorious BB Kings in NYC, February 28. The trio of Lethill Weapon, I think has proven the saying- If you set your mind to a goal, it can be achieved. I know I will be there, we hope you are too!
