Master of Illusion Darren Romeo

Darren Romeo is a multi talented, magical man with a sanguine outlook on life. He is a professional musician, an off-Broadway actor, a mystical magician/illusionist as well as the protégé of Siegfried and Roy. He is known as “The Voice of Magic” because he intertwines the captivating art of illusion with his lyrical performances to create a formal exhibition like none other. Darren lives a Bi- Coastal life betweenLos Angeles and New York City and between Branson, Missouri and Las Vegas. Traveling all over the country, reenacting his live performance, is what brings Darren just as much happiness as the show has brought exhilaration to thousands of families.

In spite of the fact that his parents had no idea how productively versatile and musically talented their son would become, Darren Robert Romeo was named after the great musical legend Bobby Darin. By the time Darren turned the ripe age of nine, he was practicing magic and entertaining his family and friends. He idolized the late Harry Blackstone Jr. and when Darren was eleven years old he had the honor of meeting Mr. Blackstone at Westbury Music Fair. Darren was invited to go backstage for an autograph and while “shaking in his boots” he handed Mr. Blackstone a business card. The next evening, while Darren was having a sleep over with his friend, Mrs. Blackstone called to say that Mr. Blackstone had a trained dove he wanted Darren to have for future magic acts. This was a turning point in Darren’s life. Although only eleven years old, he was now inspired to reach for the stars. He brought his act from birthday party magic to a more mature cabaret style performance. From that moment on, Mr. Blackstone always remembered Darren but was never able to see him perform.

Music has always moved and inspired Darren. The East Meadow High School director Jay “Hersh” Hershkowitz relished in Darren’s talent and asked him to join the school’s theatrical program. Darren performed in many musicals including Bye Bye Birdie, Grease and Pippin. Having two passions and two ambitions, Darren decided to combine two creative art forms together and entertain audiences using his mystical illusions and his superior voice. This is how he became known as “The Voice of Magic”. Darren briefly went to Hofstra University, but left to perform in the Off Broadway musical “The Fantasticks” which is considered the longest running musical in the world. Soon after his role as “The Boy” in The Fantasticks , Darren was presented with an opportunity and ventured off to Las Vegas to bring his multi talented act alive again. He has always had one assistant by his side to aid in his shows. Darren has not forgotten about chivalry, he refers to Kristy Michelsen as his “Leading Lady” not his assistant. He has too much respect for her. “She is far more important than an assistant.”  Kristy and Darren have been performing together since back yard parties in East Meadow and she still travels the world by his side. Darren has directed his own acts and has had a combination of favorable circumstances to perform at numerous venues including Caesars, The Magic Castle in Hollywood and he has even had a one man act at the Flamingo.

In 1999 He was noticed by Siegfried and Roy. His hard work and astonishing talent earned him his own nightly show at The Mirage. On opening night, Mrs. Blackstone came to see him perform and gave them a gift while on stage. “The present was the business card I gave him (Mr. Blackstone) when I was eleven. This is the essence of who I am and who I try to be. You can’t explain it any other way but as fate.”

Darren has a pleasingly positive and marvelous outlook on life. He believes in fate and destiny. He is moved by music as much as he loves magic. He explained that “music is a universal language, as is magic. Magic can transcend culture and language barriers, but music gives us the opportunity to really connect with words. We can all relate to falling on love, or getting our hearts broken or just being sad or happy…it is a gateway to emotion.” Darren is inspired by a multitude of things. He said “there is always change going on in life, no matter where you are in life. Sometimes friends, hardships or heartbreaks can inspire us… it’s a matter of whatever you are going through. But inspiration is about channeling the energy and the essence of it and attempting to turn that into art.”

Since Darren enhanced his magical talents and fulfilled his dreams at such a young age, he had a message for the young people of today. “Life can be scary and can involve taking risks. But you only live once and you only have one shot to do what’s in your heart and soul. Sometimes that can be against all odds or sometimes when the wind is at your back supporting you. Never give up. Follow your heart. Find something that you love and make it happen.”

Today, Darren is touring with the Masters of Illusion Show through out the country. He is meeting and working with several talented people and is enjoying this once in a lifetime experience. He has been honored to work with Kenny Ortega, the same director from High School Musical, who has shown Darren a few new tricks of the trade. On Thursday, February 9, 2012, The Carol M Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, focused on finding a cure and raising awareness about the importance of early and regularly scheduled examinations for both men and women will be participating in Savanna’s of Southamptons Guest Chef Series. The series is the brainchild of Johndavid Hensley renown chef in the restaurant’s efforts to support the community by donating all receipts from the nights Guest Chef Inspired Signature dish to the charity being
featured. On this night, guest chef’s and co-owners at Christopher/Thomas Catering, Tom Fabbri and Chris Konstantinidis have collaborated with fellow Guest Chef’s Dr. Brian O’Hea, Dr. Joseph DeBellis and Fran Ericsson to create a signature dish for all to enjoy . Carol Baldwin is a crusader. After being diagnosed in 1990 she was determined to beat breast cancer. The Charismatic Lisa Bianco

Lisa Bianco is a New Hyde Park native who divinely possesses a varied musical career and a wide vocal range. “Her songs are evocative and inventive.”  Not only does Lisa write her own music, she is quickly taking over as a charismatic front woman, lead vocalist, and guitarist, who has gone on to blaze a trail through out the Tri State Area.

Lisa began her unbelievable music career at a very young age. Her father played the accordion and wanted his children to experience a creative skill. He taught Lisa and her older brother Frank to play the piano. A few years later, in the third grade, she engaged in flute lessons at school. Lisa played and splendidly performed in the school’s concert band and orchestra straight through her senior year of High School.

Lisa often fantasized about becoming an illustrious rock star. Her older brother Frank played guitar and he would practice rigorously in his bedroom. For years she would listen to him bewitchingly play music by The Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin. He inspired her. But it was not until Lisa’s friend Rob Spina took some time to teach her the guitar that the reality of becoming a rock star would seize her thoughts. She quickly immersed herself in music and carried on to make this majestic dream a reality.

During college Lisa’s ambitions were growing stronger. She stated, “I began placing ads on Craigslist and in the Village Voice to find people to perform with me. I was so confident that I would book studio hours before I even had people to jam with. I would never place my female gender in any of the ads I took out, so when men would reply or call, there was always a moment of silence on the other end of the phone when they would realize a female had placed the ad for rock band members.”

Eventually, Lisa started a band named Red Jacket. But after a break up, she began to perform solo. She assertively sang in bars and restaurants in Queens. Lisa now performs with Ari Sadowitz as her bass player, Ben Nynum as her drummer, and Paul Vitolins as her “fill in” drummer. Her new CD is entitled “Momentum” and is available on ITunes. Lisa exclaimed the song “Erase You” is probably her favorite song on the CD. “It is the one and only song I wrote which was derived from my own personal experience.”

Singer, Actor and Undercover Agent Larry Costa

Larry Costa is a singer, actor, author, chemist, business owner, instructor at Columbia University, a former secret agent and a fashion and beauty expert who has worked with celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Estee Lauder and Donald Trump. He has been featured on the hit television series, “What Not to Wear.” Not only is Larry extremely talented, he is a skillful professional of numerous trades with an incredible outlook on life. He views the world in an extremely optimistic way and is always consenting to accept the next challenge with a smile on his face.

Larry was raised in a very small, rural town in Florida named Homosassa Springs. In his later teen years, he longed for excitement, passion and more opportunity, so he relocated north to the New York Area. A few years later, in his early twenties, Larry became a secret agent. His assignment was to become a confidential informative lounge singer. He was rigorously inculcated on how to extol his voice. His job entailed singing in bars, cabarets and lounges. Not only did he perform for entertainment, but he was employed as a singer to relay code words (which were found in the lyrics of each song) to undercover officials needing top secret information. He traveled the world putting his life on the line to solve investigations and high profile crimes. One year he was asked to sing at a bar to relay a mysterious message when Elizabeth Taylor’s jewels were stolen.

During his time home, Larry is also an author. He published his first book in 2003 entitled “Massage, Mind, and Body” and his second book, “Reversing the Invisible Person Complex”, was published a few years later.

Larry loves life and rejuvenating circumstances which is why he is drawn to wanting other people to feel adored. He instructs a class at Columbia University for the “Go Ask Alice” mental health program. He has owned a few spas in NYC. His first spa was called “Life is Beautiful”. It was located in SOHO. He was on the Regis and Kathy Show for a full hour promoting Mother’s Day Makeovers the first few weeks the spa was open. Today Larry owns Spa Lab in New York City. It is a hybrid spa and lab combination which intermingles luxurious spa treatments with a highly modernized chemistry lab. Larry is a chemist. He works onsite making all his own products by hand. As we speak, Larry creates and produces a topical botox from snake venom. He is the first in the United States to execute, use, and infinitively venture forward with this product. As a man of numerous talents, Larry is also an actor. He recently completed the filming of a television series called “Facejacker” which airs in February on Channel 4 in the UK. In the past he has been featured with the Oprah Network on a show called “Infidelity” and he will be seen in a documentary on Lady Gaga which will air live at the 2012 Grammy Awards.

The Bill Cunningham Show is broadcast in New York on WPIX- Channel 11 at 1pm. The show recently exposed a segment with Larry, where he sang a few songs. Bill and Larry together received 35,000 emails from fans and Larry was asked to return to the show for a second performance. Larry is passionately attached to music. He has a voice which has been compared to Frank Sinatra and Harry Connick Junior. Currently Larry performs in New York City. He is collaborating with Ashley Ward from Starfish Management Group to produce an incredible, original 10 song CD.

For most of 2012, interest rates will remain at an all time low. Invest in real estate if money allows but remember, this is not the time to sell.

I predict Seismic and volcanic activity in Northern Hemisphere areas like Greenland, Iceland, Alaska. This especially causes severe flooding. First activity late in winter February/March.

In Spring, early summer, there will be erosion of land and water will be rising in upper California, the northern coast, especially peninsula type land masses and island structures.

Talk shows will compete stronger than ever this year to come out on top but I feel many will be quick to fizzle.

Oprah has been giving much thought to making appearances in scattered specials; announcements will be made in early fall of 2012.

Britney Spears toys with the idea of having another child and continues to have consistency and strong love in her life. Good for you Britney! We are happy for you!

I worry about Barbara Walters. Her health may take a turn for the worse. Hang in there as you are loved by all!

Lindsay Lohan announces love in her life which brings her to a whole new level. Stay strong Lindsay and pave the way for all those watching you as a role model.

As we approach the New Year, thoughts about what is to come crosses everybody’s mind at one time or another. For the second year, I am proud to bring you the predictions for 2012 from some of the world’s top psychics. Let us see what the future has in store for us….

JANET RUSSELL is a well known Long Island based Intuitive/Spiritual Medium/psychic. More people will go to holistic healers; They have all the positive energies to heal. We will be taking more natural medications and no more medications from doctors.

People are not going to want to get married anymore as it’s easier to live together rather than go through all the hassles with divorce. The only ones that win are the attorneys.

The newspapers will be a thing or a memory of the past by 2015. I feel that the only way a person can see what is going on will be via the computer.

I feel that one state will be open to alternative lifestyle and people will move to that state because they feel more comfortable.

People will be airing their dirty laundry on tele-services. This way they will have a constant audience.

There will be less children born in 2012. People will get pets as they are less care, sadly.

And yes, the government will admit that we do have contact with other beings in other dimensions.

ALL these earthquakes are at LEAST 5.8, most over 6 or 7 points. IN THE USA, earthquakes will be felt in Southern California along the fault line, and in the desert areas. I would caution people living around the San Simeon area of California to be wary, and strangely, earthquakes of sizable capability will be felt in Illinois, Nevada, Colorado, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, all places not known for earthquake activity.

The Euro debt crisis will continue to get worse and folks should be ready for some strange turns. A suggestion of a world currency will arise to much debate.

Be aware that the US and China will get into heightened tensions and the US and the world would be well advised to watch out for China and N. Korea possibly joining together for world dominance and nuclear capacity.

More interesting than whom will be President next election (which has not been determined by Universal forces yet), watch what happens with the people in line..President Obama, Romney and Gingrich.

Six more Hollywood icons will leave us in 2012, and two major music stars as well.

Pulling troops out of the mid-east is a good thing but it will not transpire as expected.

MORE major breakthroughs in stem cell research, both here and abroad.

More protests across the world and the US as well, sit-ins, as people stand up. Much bloodshed.

A massive avalanche will deter how people are allowed into dangerous snow sporting areas.

Civil unrest in Russia. Fighting from within. Dangerous situation for the world at large as the Soviet government reacts to the mass protesting groups.

War on terror speeds up in 2012, and many threats to major U.S. cities, most notably New York. I do not see it as being completely successful, but damaging.

In the U.S., we should be extra cautious in watching bridges, tunnels, aqueducts, as well as water dams for chipping away, cracks and also terrorist plots.

Backlash from flu vaccines.  Possible danger to health of those that have taken the vaccine.

All across the world there will be strange weather patterns with NO consistency as known in the past. Extreme cold where unusual,  many measured snowfalls, rain heavy where no usual, drought in other areas, extreme weather and disruptions across the world. Harsh weather patterns that will make statistics get broken in 2012.

More aquatic ocean and lake animals make their way onto shore. Octopus, fish, etc…Also, as I told you last year, more species thought to be extinct are coming back, including those considered mystical (those that many thought never existed) are coming back.

Another death in the Michael Jackson family.

Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin square off against each other. Palin, as we know, is an animal abuser, both are prejudice prone, and both will be considered by those of intellect as dangerous should they become candidates running for major offices in our country. Both are worry-some if anyone were to believe in them.

Last year I told you that Borders Books would close. Another major bookstore will fold in 2012.

More scandal for Arnold Schwarzenegger. He abused his power in government and his personal life. He will be found out for more personal scandal. A book will be written about his life and it will not be pleasant.

Stocks plummet and then grow again throughout 2012. Don’t sell and run scared, hold tight to what you can. Stem cell research will be the best buy for long term stocks.

Much bloodshed in Syria as well as most of the mid-east.

New thoughts about UFO activity unfolds with the finding of this new planet that could sustain life.

A shift in the equator will be discovered and will change some of the weather patterns for countries on it.

A major government cover-up will be exposed and will shed light on past events and reveal some conspiracies.

Angela’s House assists families on Long Island, caring for medically frail children living at home with their parents or in special homes that offer 24 hour nursing support.

Beginning Thursday December 22^nd at 10am and running until Friday December 23^rd, RCN personalities Bill Powers and Orlando will broadcast LIVE for 24 hours taking song requests from listeners in exchange for a donation. It could be any song from any genre of music to raise money and awareness for Angela’s House. Along the way, there will be special guests performing live in studio as well as calling in from around the country. Special memorabilia will be available via auction from music and sports stars as well as other great items donated from merchants throughout Suffolk County.

Angela’s House is a 501 C3 non-profit organization that assists families caring for children with special health care needs that are medically fragile, chronically ill or suffering from a life threatening illness. We assist families caring for their children at home and for children that can no longer live at home we have Angela’s House. This agency was founded by the Policastro family 20 years ago following the tragic crisis they lived with their daughter Angela. This parent based origin has become the approach and philosophy they apply to each family they assist.

Gone Too Soon-SpotonLI Photojournalist Edward Andrew Snyder

About a month ago, I received an email from a fellow named Drew who was interested in working as an intern for SpotonLI. He just finished his service with the US Air Force.  I met with Drew soon after. He was shy but so pleasant. We talked about the countries that we visited and how he took photographs for the The Air Force.  Edward Andrew Snyder was a gifted photographer. He joined me on a shoot recently for YummyLI and was a true pleasure to work with. I came home after the shoot and said to my husband “Drew is my little star”.

Drew told me that he was going to see Jim Breuer at a show in Westbury. I asked him if he would like to interview him. He was thrilled. He got to interview one of his favorite comedians. The hard worker, Drew transcribed the interview flawlessly within an hour. It was incredible, he was so thankful  and happy.   The publicist for Jim spoke again with Drew and they set up an interview together with Original Pussycat Doll Kaya Jones.  He was proud of his work as he should have been because the interview came out great.  He wrote three other reviews and you can really see his talent for photography here.

Sadly on December 12th, Drew left this earth.  He was only 24 years old.  To his loved ones, we are so sorry for your loss and may God give you the comfort that you need during this difficult time. I am so grateful to have had Drew in my life, even though it was for a short time, he touched my heart and all of the readers of SpotonLI.

My little star, is now a shining star…We’ll never forget who you are…little star. Rest in Peace Drew.

Westbury Welcomes OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN

For more than four decades, OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN has captivated the world over with her talent, charm and numerous acts of humanitarianism. She is a fine actress in many hit movies, a four time Grammy Award winner and has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Today, Olivia continues to record, appear in movies, and support her favorite charities. Her short December tour comes to the NYCB Theatre at Westbury on December 8th. I was thrilled to speak with Olivia prior to the start of this tour!

MICK: I’m sure you’ve been very busy since last October with Breast Cancer Awareness month and your other projects. Did you get a chance to rest at all?
OLIVIA: I made a movie recently so I’ve been promoting that. I’ve always been an advocate of self exam and breast cancer awareness for a long time. I do get to rest when I can!

MICK: Please tell me about your first book “LivWise: Easy Recipes For A Healthy, Happy Life” (Murdoch Books) that was recently released in Australia!
OLIVIA: It’s a cook book that will be coming out in America next year at some point. The money raised from the sale of the book will go to my cancer wellness center in Melbourne, Australia that will be opening next year as well. This book is a healthy look at eating and as I’m not a gourmet chef of any kind, I asked some friends to contribute to my book. Gaia Retreat & Spa is a spa that I’m a part owner in Australia. We have the most amazing chef and we have our own garden to grow amazing food. They contributed some recipes. Another friend of mine who contributed is Karen Inge, who is a nutritionist in Melbourne (which is where my hospital is). She will be advising us at the hospital. Another friend is Kristine Matheson who heals herself through food. She talks about growing your own sprout and things like that. I also include a few of my own recipes. They’ve made a really pretty book out of it and it did really well in Australia. We are hoping is does well in America too. Again, all of my money from the book goes to the hospital!

MICK: Your new CD “Portraits: A Tribute to Great Women of Song” was produced by Phil Ramone. What was it like working with him?
OLIVIA: He’s great! He’s an old friend of mine. I’ve known him for a very long time. In fact, the first movie I ever made was a movie called “Tomorrow” in the 1960′s. Phil was the musical director so I’ve known him since then! It’s time we got to do an album together. This was done a number of years ago so this is a re-release.

MICK: How did you choose the songs for the CD?
OLIVIA: It was all women that I’ve admired. Their songs or their singing affected me in some way so I picked all of the women whose songs that I loved.

MICK: In your amazing life, what would you consider your biggest thrill up to this point in your life?
OLIVIA: Having my daughter! Nothing compares to that!

MICK: And how is she doing?
OLIVIA: She doing quite well thank you!

MICK: Do you keep in touch with John Travolta?
OLIVIA: Yes we do keep in touch!

MICK: In 2007, your holiday recording “Christmas Wish” was a big hit. Is Christmas your favorite holiday?
OLIVIA: I do like Christmas because people do get together at that time of year. When I lived in Los Angeles, my house was the place where we would do a lot of the traditional things on holidays like Easter. I used to love Easter when my daughter was small because we would have all the kids over looking for Easter eggs. But Christmas is a lovely holiday because people make an effort to get together.

MICK: You and your husband John Easterling are very big on spreading the word about saving the rain forest. Have you seen more progress in this movement?
OLIVIA: It’s hard to say. I think the more awareness and education, the more improvement will be and the word eventually gets to paths of people who really care. My husband is very optimistic about this and he believes there is change happening. I’d rather be on the edge of optimism because I think we can turn things around before it’s too late. My husband’s company gets herbs from the Amazon rain forest and these herbs have amazing healing qualities. Most of our pharmaceuticals are based on research they done on these pharmaceutical plants. I think that when they realize if we lose the rain forest, we will lose all of these keys to healing. It is incredibly import to save!

MICK: How did you meet your husband?
OLIVIA: I met my husband about 18 years ago through my friends Nancy and Jim. They went to a health and wellness convention and he was demonstrating his herbs to people.
They took the herbs and felt so amazing that they went back the next day and became friends with him. Then they introduced me to him when I went to a talk about the rain forest. That was almost 19 years ago, right after I had breast cancer. I ended up giving him a puppy because he loved my dog so much. That dog just passed away last year. We were friends for a long time and then four years ago, he invited me to the rain forest and we fell in love!

MICK: 2012 already looks like a very busy year for you with the new movie and the new CD. What’s coming after that?
OLIVIA: It’s going to be a real incredible year because the first section of my hospital in Melbourne will open. The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre which is something I’ve been working to help raise money for the last eight years. The building is almost complete and we will be opening the first part of it in June.That’s really exciting! The culmination of many years work! I’m also doing a tour in Australia with a symphony and we will be raising money for the hospital.

MICK: Which of today’s artists do you like?
OLIVIA: Oh gosh there’s so many talented people! I love Pink! I love Beyonce. There’s so much talent out there, I’m always blown away! The standards of the singing and writing are just fantastic!

MICK: Do you still live in Australia?
OLIVIA: I have a place in Australia and my husband and I are based out of Florida now. I moved from California to Florida because that’s where he is. That was a whole change of life but it’s been wonderful.

MICK: Is there anybody you would still like to work with that you haven’t worked with already?
OLIVIA: Yes tons of people! I’d like to work with Rod Stewart again sometime. We did something together around 30 years ago. Of course you always want to sing with a Beatle so I’d love to sing with Paul McCartney. I’d also like to work with Eric Clapton. There’s so many talented guys out there and some amazing girls too!

MICK: You are coming to Westbury on December 8th. What can your fans expect to hear?
OLIVIA: They will hear the songs they expect to hear from what I gather from my fan mail and when they write to me. They will hear my hits, plus I’ll put a smattering of new things in like from the movie I just made. I do a new song for that so that will be in the show. I will probably do some Christmas songs because we are close to Christmas! And a song off of “Portraits”. It will be a mixture of my whole career.
